AUDI A3 E-TRON

IAA 2013: Audi A3 e-tron

Starting price: approximately $30,000

The Audi A3 E-Tron is the first electric car produced by the company. The E-Tron is a plug-in hybrid that is capable of producing 2014 horsepower and 258 ft-lb of torque. Although the auto only sees an 18 mile range when running in electric mode, it can go from zero to 60 MPH in under eight seconds and is one of the greenest cars on the road today. The vehicle also has a large amount of storage space for a hybrid featuring 40 cubic feet of room which is above average for the green cars on the market. The A-3 E-Tron also handles extremely well, and can go more than 550 miles on a single gas tank.

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of the most green cars on the road today. The vehicle is a plug-in hybrid, which allows it to actually deliver a more useful range than other autos that are only electric driven. The PHEV has been sold in Japan and Europe for a while now, and it is one of the best-selling electric cars in Europe. It can comfortably seat five passengers, features all-wheel drive, and can get more than 30 miles range while using its electric drive. The auto will switch over to its “gasoline” mode when the electric charge runs out; however, its usefulness overcomes these drawbacks. The auto’s price does vary a bit depending on what country it is being sold (in Japan the price drops to $33,350 USD while in Norway it is $72,600), but the Outlander PHEV looks to make its debut in the United States soon.

The Tesla Model X has been one of the most talked about green cars coming to the market soon. Test models of the Model X have been seen on the roadways over the past year as the company gears up for the official release of the all-electric crossover that is the designed follow-up to the Tesla Model S. The Model X will feature more than a 200 mile range on a single charge, all-wheel drive, and the ability to seat seven adults comfortably. One of the more impressive aspects about the auto is its ability to go from zero to 60 in just over three seconds (3.2 in testing). This makes it not only one of the most green cars on the road today, but also one of the fastest. The price estimate of the vehicle is expected to be adjusted by the company when it hits the market, but for now looks to remain south of the $100K mark.

BMW X5 EDRIVE

The BMW X5 eDrive is one of the greenest cars on the road today. It is a hybrid, electric version of the popular BMW X5 automobile and the company plans to have the widespread release of the vehicle during 2015. The SUV features an all-wheel drive, and also includes the ground-breaking, EfficientDynamics drive technology. The “All-Electric” range of the vehicle is only 19 miles; however, the efficiency of the vehicle is unparalled in the industry. The X5 eDrive can accelerate from zero to 60 MPH in under seven seconds making it extremely fast when compared to non-green SUVs on the market today. The X5 eDrive is also one of the most “intelligent” autos on the market today. It will recommend the most fuel-efficient routes for the driver, and use the onboard sensors, radar, and navigation system to help improve the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

KIA SOUL EV

The Kia Soul EV is one of the most green and affordable cars on the road today. Coming in just north of $30,000, the Soul EV delivers a 93 mile range on a single electric charge, and is rated at 120 MPGe (city) and 92 MPGe (highway). The auto was originally only offered for sale in the state of California, but was released to other markets in the U.S. during 2015. The Soul EV can be recharged to the 80% level in just over 30 minutes using a 50 kW charging system, and there are three different charging ports on the automobile. The car comes with an app to help drivers locate charging stations, and authorized Kia dealers will provide free charging to owners of the automobile. The auto is rated at 109 horsepower and delivers 210 lb-ft of torque.

CHEVY VOLT

The Chevy Volt underwent a significant revision for the 2016 model year, and features a different body style than its predecessor as well as an improved electric range. The current version of the Volt is one of the greenest cars on the road today getting 38 miles on a single charge for its all electric range and a respectable 37 MPG fuel efficiency when running on gasoline. The auto features a 98 MPGe overall rating on its battery, and the vehicle has become known for its high driving quality. On the negative side, the Volt can only seat four passengers and does not include a large amount of trunk space.

The new edition of the automobile will be rebranded as the Elux Karma, and will look to follow-on the successes of the previous editions of the auto by targeting the luxury market. Justin Bieber is the best-known owner of the Fisker Karma, and it will be exciting to see what improvements the new manufacturer of the automobile makes going forward.

DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01

The Detroit Electric SP:01 is a high-end electric car that is one of the greenest on the road today. The brand has history dating to the original Detroit Electric company that was opened in 1907, and was rebirthed under CEO Albert Lam. The car’s styling is based on the Lotus Elise, and it features lithium-ion battery packs that are expected to have a single charge range of 180 miles. The engine of the sports car is rated at 281 bhp at 166 ft-lb of torque. A full charge of the sports car’s batteries is expected to take up to four hours to complete, and the car is able to go from zero to 60 MPH in just 3.2 seconds. The SP:01 also features a high-end speed of 155 MPH for those who have shied away from electric vehicles due to speed limitations.

BMW I8 SUPERCAR

The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid is one of the most revolutionary green cars to hit the market in the past decade. The i8 is capable of seating four adults comfortably and features a turbocharged three cylinder engine that when married up with the two electric motors of the auto sees a total of 357 horsepower. The top speed of the car is 155 MPH, and it handles equivalent to the non-green BMW sports cars on the market. The car can go from zero to 60 MPH in just 3.6 seconds, and the company has also developed a test i8 supercar that runs off of hydrogen fuel cells as a pre-look at what is to come from the company in the green car market. The hydrogen fuel cell powered auto can see a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge, and it goes from zero to 62 MPH in approximately six seconds with a top speed of 124 MPH.

The BMW i3 is one of the most green cars on the road today. The auto sees a very impressive 124 MPGe while running on the battery, and its gas only fuel efficiency rating is a respectable 39 MPG. The auto gets upwards of 81 miles on a single charge of the battery when running in all electric mode, and it can go from zero to 60 MPH in just 6.5 seconds. The i3 is capable of charging its battery in just three hours from a standard 220 volt outlet, and the car is rated at a respectable 170 horsepower. The top speed of the auto is a very respectable 92 MPH, and the i3 has quickly become one of the most popular green cars on the market.

VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF

The single charge range of the car is more than sufficient for those who live in an urban environment; however, it does require some planning on the part of the car owner for those who live in more of a country setting to make sure it doesn’t run out of charge during the daily commute. The top speed of the e-Golf is 87 MPH, and it can go from zero to 60 MPH in 10 seconds. The car’s engine is rated at 170 horsepower, and it can achieve 199 ft-lb of torque.

The battery pack is a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that lies beneath the floor of the car between the side rails of the vehicle.

The auto manufacturer also includes additional perks for drivers of the auto to include an integrated key transmitter, remote keyless entry, and a panic button for additional safety for auto passengers.

The Kia Soul EV is one of the most green autos you will find on the market today. It is an all-electric car and sees a nice 105 MPGe with a single charge range of 93 miles on the battery. If one has been putting off buying an electric car, then the Soul EV may be just the car to change your mind. Moderately priced, the Soul EV is powered by a liquid-cooled permanent magnet electric motor that is rated for 210 lb-ft of torque and 109 horsepower. The battery lies beneath the floor of the auto, and the car has a total stowage of 19.1 cubic feet. The car can go from zero to 60 in under 10 seconds (it averages 8.1 to 9.1 seconds), and it has a top governed speed of 90 MPH.

Sized larger than most competing electric car sedans, the Focus is one of the more popular electric cars on the market, and it is one of the more reliable electric automobiles on the market today.
